| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή εξετάζει το ζήτημα της έμφυλης βίας στο θεατρικό έργο Machinal της Sophie Treadwell μέσα από τη φεμινιστική θεωρία για την επιτελεστικότητα της Judith Butler. Επιχειρεί να αναδείξει τα στοιχεία της έμφυλης βίας που υφίσταται η κεντρική ηρωίδα του έργου Έλεν και να υποστηρίξει ότι η βία αυτή συντελεί στον καθημερινό, συμβολικό θάνατό της με την έννοια της στέρησης των δικαιωμάτων της και του εγκλωβισμού που αυτό συνεπάγεται στην έμφυλη «ταυτότητά» της. Για τον σκοπό αυτό περιγράφεται αρχικά το ζήτημα της γυναικείας ταυτότητας, όπως διαφαίνεται μέσα από α) τις συνθήκες ζωής της γυναίκας στην Αμερική των 20’s, β) τη ζωή της ίδιας της συγγραφέα, και γ) την υπόθεσή της Ruth Snyder που αποτελεί αφετηρία για τη συγγραφή του Machinal. Στη συνέχεια, επιχειρείται σημειολογική προσέγγιση του έργου μέσα από τρία σημειολογικά εργαλεία/μοντέλα του Greimas (μοντέλο δράσης, σύμβαση, σημειωτικό τετράγωνο), ώστε να ερευνηθούν τα συγκρουσιακά πεδία της δράσης και να φωτιστεί η επιθυμία της Νέας Γυναίκας για την απελευθέρωσή της από τα μοντέλα της πατριαρχικής κοινωνίας που επιβάλλουν τον κοινωνικό εγκλωβισμό της. Επίσης, μέσα από την οπτική της Judith Butler επιχειρείται η αποφυσικοποίηση των φαινομενικά έμφυλων ρόλων της γυναίκας μέσα στο έργο και η αποκάλυψή τους ως μηχανισμός διαιώνισης της πατριαρχίας. Ο μηχανισμός αυτός ορίζει σε τέτοιο βαθμό τη ζωή της ηρωίδας ώστε να καθιστά τη ζωή ως έναν εν ζωή θάνατο, μια δολοφονία με δράστη την πατριαρχία.
Ως καρπός της μελέτης και αυτής της προσέγγισης, προέκυψε η συγγραφή και παρουσίαση μιας πολυπρόσωπης διασκευής του Machinal με τίτλο «Η Δεύτερη Δολοφονία». Η διασκευή αυτή επιχείρησε να μεταφέρει το έργο της Treadwell στην παρούσα ελληνική πραγματικότητα, εμπλουτίζοντάς το με σύγχρονα θεατρικά και λογοτεχνικά κείμενα, και με μαρτυρίες έμφυλης βίας, με σκοπό να επιστήσει την προσοχή του κοινού στο ζήτημα της εμμένουσας βίας κατά των γυναικών. | el_GR |

| dc.description.translatedabstract | Τhis master’s thesis examines the subject of gender-based violence in Sophie’s Treadwell theatre play Machinal through Judith Butler’s feministic theory of performativity. It attempts to highlight the elements of gender-based violence suffered by Helen, and to argue that this violence contributes to her daily, symbolic death in the sense of her deprivation from her rights and her entrapment in her gendered identity. For this purpose, the subject of the female identity is described as seen through a) the living conditions of women in America in the 20’s, b) the life of the author herself, and c) the case of Ruth Snyder, which is the starting point of the writing of Machinal. Next, a semiotic approach of the play is attempted through three semiotic tools/models of Greimas (actancial model, contract, semiotic square), in order to investigate the conflicting fields of action and to shed light upon the desire of the New Woman for her liberation from the models of the patriarchal society that impose her social confinement. Furthermore, through Judith Butler’s perspective, an attempt is made to denaturalize the seemingly gendered roles of women in the play, and to reveal them as perpetuating mechanisms of patriarchy that use violence on Helen. It is argued that these mechanisms define Helen’s life to such an extent that they render it a non-life, a living death, a murder with patriarchy as the perpetrator.
The result of this approach is the writing and presentation of a multifaceted adaptation of Machinal with the title “The Second Murder”. This adaptation attempts to transfer Treadwell’s play to the present Greek reality, enriching it with contemporary theatre and literary texts, as well as with testimonies of gender-based violence, in order to draw the public’s attention to the problem of the persistent violence against women. | el_GR |
