Introduction: An organisational culture constitutes a set of values, convictions, patterns and assumptions embraced by all members of a unit. It is evident in the philosophy, goals, functions as well as in the structure of each unit. It influences and guides the perceptions, reflections, behaviours and emotions of the individuals who belong to this unit. According to pertinent research which is well substantiated by international bibliography, organisational culture affects the levels of efficiency, effectiveness, welfare, competitiveness and quality of the provided yield of a unit. In all likelihood the working people in a unit will be asked to cope with situations of ambiguity and role clash as to the part they are required to play within the operational context of the unit they belong to. Aim: The current survey extends to three areas worthy of elaboration: first, it aims to depict both the desired and the applied organisational culture of Cypriot private hospitals; second, it seeks to define the degree of role ambiguity and role conflict that the nursing and obstetrics staff would have to deal with during their course of duties; last but not least, it intends to address the extent to which the nursing and obstetrics staff consider their vocation to be rewarding and professionally promising. Material and Method: An overall of 430 obstetricians, nursing and paramedical staff working in 18 private hospitals across all provinces in Cyprus took part in the survey. There were specifically 354 women and 76 men ranging from 21 to 70 years old with the average being 35,6 years old. The survey was conducted from November 2011 until February 2012 and 73,39 of the participants responded positively. The material utilized for the survey purposes consisted of ambiguity and role clash scales of Rizzo and ass., organisational culture scales of O’Reilly and Chatman (Organisational Culture Profile) and job satisfaction scales. For statistical analysis purposes, test Measure t has been applied for bisectional variables while Dispersion Analysis and non-parametric Kruskal- Wallis trial have been implemented for variables of more than two categories. Results: The participants demonstrate high levels of clarity and awareness of their professional roles reaching a mean total of 4,24 while simultaneously exhibiting moderate levels of role conflict reaching a mean total of 2,92. Additionally, being “efficiency-conscious” is regarded as the most significant quality totalling an average of 1,46 (S.D. 0,59) with “competitiveness” being ranked the least important by the personnel at an average of 1,86 (S.D. 0,62). The category in which the desired degree converges most with the provided degree is “competitiveness” with an average differential of -0,60 (S.D. 0,80) and the category in which the desired degree converges the least with the provided degree is in the “emphasis on reward” with an average differential of -1,47 (S.D. 1,20). Finally, 7 out of 10 nursing and obstetrics staff who work in the private sector of Health Services profess themselves either extremely satisfied or fairly satisfied with their overall work. Conclusion: It is crucial that the foundations be laid for enforcing instrumental administrative innovations which would result not only in the improvement of the organisation and operation of private hospitals in Cyprus but also in the promotion of high quality health services so as to guarantee the welfare of all the organisations which form the cornerstone of the future General Health Plan. The survey into the organisational culture of private hospitalization in Cyprus, a better study of the degree of ambiguity and the degree of role conflict as well as a deeper reading of the degree of vocational fulfilment that the Cypriot nursing and obstetrics staff seem to possess would doubtless assist in the accomplishment of the aforementioned goals.el_GR
