This Thesis seeks to study and analyse the main characteristics of the various acting methods based upon the Stanislavski System. The research, study and analysis focuses upon Stanislavski himself, his system and the Stanislavski acting system core characteristics by taking into consideration the necessity for such a method, regarding the context and acting circumstances within the period of time in which the Stanislavski method was created. The Stanislavski system approaches and acts upon each character by relying on realism. In order for this study to clarify the main differences between the realism-bound Stanislavski system approach in contrast to the various non-realistic approaches, the most important representatives of the latter are going to be examined. Studying the Stanislavski system in depth, one observes two conflicting parts: The first part focuses upon the concept of “Affective Memory”, whilst in the second part, “Affective Memory” is totally cast aside, as the focus now becomes the idea of “Physical Actions”. This is quite interesting not only for the Stanislavski System itself but also in relation to his successors, since some have based their method on the “Affective Memory” idea whilst others developed their work, applying the notion of “Physical Actions”. The three most important Stanislavski students and successors who are going to be examined at the beginning of this thesis are: Boleslavski, Vakhtangov and Michael Chekhov. Boleslavski chooses to adopt the first part of the Stanislavski system (Affective Memory). Vakhtangov manages to combine both Stanislavski system parts, also incorporated into his own method, parts of Meyerhold’s non-realistic techniques. Chekhov, on the other hand, completely ignores the first part of the Stanislavski system (Affective Memory), creating a new method similar on many points to the Stanislavsky System that Stanislavsky himself chose to follow in his later years. This Thesis continues by studying and analysing the Stanislavski System successors in the U.S.A. Lee Strasberg at Group Theater and later at The Actors Studio, follows Stanislavski System’s Affective Memory. Sanford Meisner and Stella Adler developed their own acting method, based upon the Stanislavski System’s Physical Actions. Meisner managed to create his own separate school by focusing on other Stanislavsky System characteristics that seemed more important in his viewpoint. This Thesis concludes by studying the most important younger generation acting teachers: Uta Hagen, David Mamet, Susan Batson and Ivana Chubbuck, who have succeeded in creating unique and, innovative acting method techniques on how to realistically approach a role, thus leaving their mark in the field of acting.el_GR
