Gold’s course starts from Lydian mines and continues all through Greek cities. But while gold’s form changes thanks to coinage, economic conditions swift and so does the form of society. Directly connected to the economy and the means of production, gold is understood each time in relation to the historical and social context. This M.A. dissertation aims in investigating the role being played by the references concerning gold within three novels regarding different historical eras: the hellenistic Leukippe and Clitophon by Achilles Tatius, the byzantine vernacular romance Livistros and Rhodamne and the verse novel of Cretan Renaissance Erotocritos by Vicentzos Kornaros. Ιn different extracts of these three novels, gold is part of socially symbolic acts which construct and reconstruct institutions, values, identities and relations. In this context, the interface between social coexistence, cases of transaction, offerings, management of friendship and wedding union are being examined in the different parts of this dissertation. Gold’s interconnection with social coexistence is also analyzed with regards to class identity and specific reification of space, garment, as well as the moral attitude, the unfolding of sexuality. Accepting Marx’s thesis that no subject can act being cut off from the economy of its own time as a starting point, this M.A. dissertation is theoriticaly founded on the belief Fredric Jameson establishes that every literary work includes an implicit message, relavant to the ultimate perspective of the literary work which is a political one.el_GR
