This postgraduate thesis attempts to investigate the male ethos of three tragic heroines, Clytemnestra (Aeschylus’ Agamemnon), Helen and Antigone in Euripides’ and Sophocles’ namesake plays. A chapter is devoted to each play, taking into account the status of women at the time of creation of tragedies. At the time women were excluded from public life and limited within the oikos’ limits as it is evidenced by the historical sources and the texts of tragedies themselves. The comparison with the androgynous heroine displays the deviation from normal, the reversal of the order and the need to restore this order. In the Agamemnon in which the king is slaughtered, and in the Antigone, in which the heroine dies the reversal is disastrous and leads to the collapse of the oikos and further of the city. In the Helen the reversal has a good purpose and leads to the restoration of the oikos and the prosperity of the city. In any case the reversals use the woman as a starting-point for the (re)definition of masculinity, thus making the male the central figure of tragedy.el_GR
