the most essential and one way for the survival of museums, but these are pumped
through a complex management system.
This requires the search for resources in other directions, and a new more extrovert and
dynamic mode that state museums must follow for their operation.
A well-organized system of administration and management could replace the existing,
make maximum use of available funds and to provide continuity in the work of museums.
Major international visual arts events can continue to exist only through proper
management, based on European tested models but also through collective efforts,
museums’ clusters or even partnerships with private companies.
The purpose of this research is to propose a management system for museum of
contemporary art which, in the midst of limited financial and human resources, will be
able to make the best possible use of the opportunities in producing projects, to optimize
the benefit from its generated events, to exploit any entrepreneurial uniqueness of its
collection, to be able to absorb and exploit in the best possible way both national and
European funds available in the Greek market through various programs, and achieve the
standards of European relevant institutions.
By establishing a system of administration of resources and proper management of
projects that are developed, the museums will stimulate their role in Greek society and be
able to rally the public around them.
This thesis focuses on the requirements of modern strategic management which can be
used as leverage to overcome such museum the current sustainability problems it faces
and which have become everyday reality. Through the example of the State Museum of
Contemporary Art, which is examined as a case study, but also on the results of a survey
in European museums of modern and contemporary art, attempts to benchmark with
