dc.description.abstractThe dissertation focuses on the way in which risk management planning, airline response plans and business continuity plans changed after the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001 (9/11). The overall objective of the research is to briefly present terrorism, aviation terrorism and the historical background of aviation terrorism, the theoretical background of risk management and business continuity planning, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the response of aviation industry and United States (U.S.) government after the attacks, the new risk management planning, response planning and business continuity planning of aviation industry and U.S. government. In addition, the objective of the thesis is to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the impacts of the attacks on aviation industry and on the United States of America. In addition, one of the objectives is to analyze the response plan that was implemented by U.S. government, American Airlines and United Airlines, which were part of the attacks, on 11th September 2001 and if the companies were effectively able to continue operating after the attacks. Moreover, the thesis seeks to investigate if airline enterprises in cooperation with U.S. government organized new strategies for managing, responding and recovering from a crisis. The research targets in analyzing the new measures that were implemented in aviation industry that would enable the industry and airline enterprises to handle a future possible crisis, such as 9/11 attacks.el_GR
