Otherness is a concept often associated with negative characteristics. The other person who differs from myself due to language, gender, ethnic group or religion is becoming the other person who I choose to keep at distance, the stranger. In many cases, the lack of tolerance towards him or her translates into verbal or bodily violence from the surroundings, familiar, social or national and, furthermore, into violation of his/her rights. In this M.A dissertation the otherness issue in Patouhas, a novella by Ioannis Kondylakis, is examined in three of its different aspects: linguistic, gender-based and ethnic. In the first place, otherness is investigated in a dialogical perspective according to the theory of Russian literary critic and philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin with emphasis on the concept of chronotope. Second, man and woman are analysed as gender-based otherness and their co-existence in love is studied according to the status Alain Badiou attributes to love. Finally, the ethnic and religious communities in the novella are examined as manifestations of otherness and the contribution of the main character in handling ethnic otherness is evaluated.el_GR
