Objective: The undertaking of a drug utilization study aiming at medicinal products that contain domperidone in order to examine whether the pharmacists that are currently operating within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, comply with the directions given by the European Medicines Agency as measures of eliminating the dangers that may occur from the usage of these medicinal products. Methodology: The study was held by issuing and submitting a questionnaire that contained 5 main topics (1. Demographics, 2. Usage, 3. Contraindications, 4. Adverse Reactions, 5. Dosage). The target group of the study was set to be a significant number of Cyprus registered pharmacists (either operating in the private or public sector). The statistical analysis of the results of this study was held with the assistance of the statistical program IBM SPSS. Results: There was a submission of 150 fully and correctly filled questionnaires from which a percentage of 77.3% was originated form pharmacists operating in the private sector while the remaining 22.7% from pharmacists working in the public sector. Moreover, the 16% of the pharmacists claimed that they received prescriptions that contained products consisted of domperidone post August 2014 for non-licensed indications (off the label use) with all of the prescriptions occurring from the private sector (P=0,001). Pharmacists’ compliance by means of danger elimination reached a percentage of 76.7% as regards information and knowledge on new compositions, 62.68% as regards knowledge on additional monitoring, 91.33% for contraindications, a percentage of 85.56% for adverse reactions, a 87.33% for the maximum length of treatment, a percentage of 95.33% for dosage on adults, 88.67% for pediatric dosage (children above the age of 12) and finally a percentage of 73.34% for children under the age of 12. Conclusions: Even if a significant number of pharmacists possesses the required knowledge about the recent updates around medicinal products that are consisted of or contain domperidone, it is however still necessary to alter or to give a new approach on the informative method on such matters since the current method of issuance and postage of informative letters seems to fail (23.4% claimed that they did not receive or they did not remember to receive any relevant information). New informative methods such for example the operation of webinars (web - seminars), the access on online information portals, the direct postage of these informative letters from the governmental pharmaceutical agency or the postage of electronic brochures could potentially increase the percentage on pharmacists’ compliance on the required levels. There is of course an essential need of undertaking highest levels on drug utilization studies that contain domperidone and the expansion of such studies on other health professionals such as doctors that operate on either public or private sector.el_GR
