Βάγια Καραΐσκου είναι Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια στο Μεταπτυχιακό Πρόγραμμα «Πολιτιστική Πολιτική και Ανάπτυξη» στο Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Επί σειρά ετών έχει διδάξει στο Πρόγραμμα «Σπουδές στον Ευρωπαϊκό Πολιτισμό» του Ελληνικού Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου, στο Πρόγραμμα «Σπουδές στον Ελληνικό Πολιτισμό» του ΑΠΚΥ, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας (Τμήματα Αρχιτεκτόνων και Προσχολικής Εκπαίδευσης) και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών (Τμήμα Θεατρικών Σπουδών). Από το 2022 είναι Διευθύντρια της Έδρας UNESCO στο αντικείμενο “Visual Anticipation and Futures Literacy towards Visual Literacy”. Το 2014 υπήρξε Andrew J. Mellon Distinguished Visitor-in-Residence in the Fine Art στο Macalester College (Saint Paul, MN, USA). Η ερευνητική δραστηριότητα της Δρος Καραΐσκου αφορά σε θέματα οπτικότητας στο πλαίσιο των σχέσεων μεταξύ καλλιτεχνικής και πολιτισμικής παραγωγής και κοινωνίας. Εστιάζει, ειδικότερα, στην πολιτισμική μνήμη, ταυτότητες και οπτικές αφηγήσεις στην Ελλάδα, στην Κύπρο και ευρύτερα στον ευρωπαϊκό και μη χώρο, όπως επίσης και σε θέματα συλλογικής μνήμης σε κοινωνίες συγκρούσεων. Είναι εκπρόσωπος της Κύπρου και μέλος της διαχειριστικής επιτροπής (MC Member) στη Δράση COST “Slow Memory: Transformative Practices for Times of Uneven and Accelerating Change” και μέλος των ομάδων εργασιών WG3 “Transformation of Politics” & WG6 “Training and Capacity Building”. Η τελευταία της έρευνα «Το μέλλον του παρελθόντος» (“Futures of the Past”), το οποίο σχετίζεται, επίσης, με το ερευνητικό αντικείμενο της Έδρας UNESCO, διερευνά πώς η πολιτισμική κληρονομιά και η συλλογική μνήμη διαμορφώνει τον τρόπο σκέψης και δράσης μας. Η μικρού μήκους ταινία της Trojan Women (2022) και το BABELproject είναι τα πιο πρόσφατα αποτελέσματα αυτής της έρευνας. She has taught in the BA programme “Studies in Hellenic Culture” at the Open University of Cyprus, the BA programme “Studies in the European Civilization” at the Hellenic Open University, as well as at the University of Thessaly (departments of Architecture and Preschool Education) and University of Patras (department of Theater Studies). Since 2022, she is the Director of the UNESCO Chair on “Visual Anticipation and Futures Literacy towards Visual Literacy”. In 2014 she was Andrew J. Mellon Distinguished Visitor-in-Residence in the Fine Art at the Macalester College (Saint Paul, MN, USA). Her research activity concerns issues of visuality in the context of the relations between artistic and cultural production and society. She focuses, in particular, on cultural memory, identities and visual narratives in Greece, Cyprus and abroad, as well as on collective identities in conflict societies. She is the Cypriot MC Member for the COST Action “Slow Memory: Transformative Practices for Times of Uneven and Accelerating Change” and member of WG3 “Transformation of Politics” & WG6 “Training and Capacity Building”. Her last research project “Futures of the Past”, which relates to the UNESCO Chair project as well, explores how heritage and collective memory shape our assumptions and dictate our anticipations. Her short film Trojan Women re-imagined (2022) and BABELproject are the most recent outcomes of this project. She regularly participates in international conferences and publishes in peer reviewed scientific journals and collective volumes. She has published six (6) books relevant to her research field as sole writer.
