Introduction: The thesis that follows refers to the eating habits of young people of Cyprus and the importance of nutrition on health. Diet is an important factor in maintaining or not human health. The consequences of malnutrition are hurtful to health, especially when habits are adopted in early childhood, because it contributes to the susceptibility of various diseases. Purpose: The research aims to examine and determine the eating habits of young people of Cyprus from a random sample of freshmen in the European University of Cyprus and to draw conclusions with respect to the eating habits of young people and the size of the problem that exists in Cyprus. Furthermore, the second objective of this research is to correlate the results in order to examine the nature of the relationship and the degree of association between the proportion of young people with poor eating habits and to address recommendations for the eating habits of young people of Cyprus. Sample - Method: The sample consisted of one hundred twenty one (121) Cypriot students of European University Cyprus. The data was collected using a questionnaire on eating habits and food preferences of young people, and the frequency of consumption of specific foods. The results were processed and statistically analysed with SPSS version 16.0. Results: In the literature used, and the results of the study, it emerged that young people keep on unhealthy eating habits and food preferences, possibly putting their health at serious risk if actions are not taken immediately. Specifically, 55.7% of young people do not prepare food at home or they prepare food at home from two to three times a month. Furthermore, 31.4% of young people eat at fast food restaurants two to three times a week, while 4.2% eat everyday. In addition, 47.2% of young people do not exercise at all, while a 79.3% of obese respondents do not have fixed meal times. The results show that young people today, though aware of the problems that can be caused by poor health diet, they do not systematically follow a healthy diet. Discussion: The findings show significant similarities with the dietary preferences and habits of young people in other countries. In particular, there is increased consumption of ready meals without keeping constant time between meals. Furthermore, reduced physical activity has been observed. These are factors that affect the health of young people. These findings should sensitize the health authorities of Cyprus for the organization of Health Education on nutrition and exercise, which should begin in early childhood so that young people are already aware of the benefits of nutrition, which will help them to maintain good health.el_GR
