This MA dissertation focuses on the evolution of the Cypriot sketch, since its birth in 1953 until today, and its role in preserving tradition and also the Cypriot dialect. A thorough reference is made to the journey of sketch from radio to television and on stage, focusing on the historical background as well as the particular characteristics, the subject matter, the direction and the scenography. A notable fact is how the themes change according to the political and social changes of the island. While in general, the Cypriot sketch has an ethnographic character and its themes revolve around the ways of rural life in the country side, the authors do not remain unmoved by the occurrence of significant events, such as the Turkish invasion, the occupation and the displacement of a large part of the population. The engagement of the Cypriot sketch by the public and its parallel course with the historical and social developments of the country, are examined in a separate chapter. Via the sketch, one can observe the evolution and urbanization of the Cypriot dialect. In the plays of the first decades, the authors made use of the language spoken in the villages, with the peculiarities of each region. As the years go by, we can document a variation, in the sense that some words have completely disappeared. The research was based on the existing literature, from audiovisual material which was provided by the Archives of Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and by the Archives of the Cyprus Theatrical Museum, the Theatrical Organization of Cyprus and other local Theatrical Stages. Information was also extracted from the personal interviews of directors, actors and others, conducted by the researcher. The current thesis was executed for the fulfilment of the requirements of the Postgraduate Program “Theatrical Studies” of the Open University of Cyprus with the direction of Acting and Directing.el_GR
