Climate change is already affecting the Eastern Mediterranean more intensely than other parts of the world. Cyprus will face limited access to water resources, increasing the risk of desertification. Prosopis farcta has been used in many cases to improve the environment in arid and semi-arid areas with severe water shortages. The aim of the dissertation is to study the response of P. farcta to 3 different methods of breaking seed dormancy, and to 3 different types of growth containers (of the same 5 liters volume but different dimensions) under different irrigation regimes in 90 plants, with the aim of increasing germination success and deeper development of the root system. Breaking seed dormancy and the initiation of germination process were examined by mechanical and chemical scarification. The effects of the container were examined by preserving seedlings in 60 cm deep tubes (tube, cut tube for easier planting) in relation to classic pots for 90 days with or without irrigation. Germination rate was 3 fold higher for the mechanical and chemical treatment compare to untreated seeds. Accordingly, root elongation rates were substantially higher in the tube type container after a drought period of 30 days in relation to the pots experiment. The root system in the tubes was significantly longer than in the pots by about 50% (p <0.05) after cessation of irrigation, while tubes and pots showed similar moisture levels at the bottom of the container after cessation of irrigation. Productivity above and below the ground was significantly higher in the tube than in the pot by about 25% (p <0.05) as well as the ability of the tube to retain moisture during irrigation. In conclusion, the method of growing seedlings in a tube seems to increase transplanting success under drought conditions, allowing root access to greater depth. Yet importantly, the sharp increase of rooting depth and unrestricted growth responses points toward improved plant adaptation capacity to changing water contents and root zone environment. The method of the tube may be appropriate for deep-rooted species such as P. farcta. It allows better adaptation to drought conditions even from the nursery, in order to save water but also to reduce the loss during tree planting in drought and barren soils, dealing more effectively with the risk of desertification. In this content, understanding the relationship between shoot and root dynamics in dry ecosystems is of major importance to mitigate the effects of desertification. These results may also be of practical significance to alleviate soil and water losses in revegetation projects in arid and semi-arid regions.el_GR
