Based on the basic principles of the theories of reception and reader-response criticism, this postgraduate dissertation studies the reception of Euripides’ Iphigenia at Tauris by Goethe. Euripides’ drama occupies a very important place among the ancient Greek texts that exercised an immense influence on the art and the literature of later periods and possesses an impressive history of reception. Goethe’s treatment of the myth is the most important moment in this history. This dissertation studies the transformation of the myth and of the ancient text and the way in which Goethe handles the ancient Greek mythological and literary material and brings together the old and the new in order to create a work that reflects the problems, ideas and values of his own era.el_GR
