Object of this MPhil thesis is the narrative approach of the Prometheus’ and Ιο’s monologues, which offer the continuous flow required to the static –as regards the action– Prometheus Bound of Aeschylus. This study employs the narrative criteria of time and focus, as defined within the narrative typology of G. Genette. The project aims at revealing the underlying narrative structures that contribute to a fuller understanding and interpretation of the text, essentially offering a distinct suggestion for reading this tragedy. The complex use of time is characteristic of the work of the great tragic poet, who, in order to provoke anxiety, abandons the natural sequence of the events and shifts the narrative first to the past, in order to associate it later with an expectation or a prediction concerning the events that shall happen in the future. The study of the web of time along with the code of focalization of the dramatis personae foregrounds the slow but steady dramatic development of the characters that attains its peak at the end of the tragedy, while at the same time it illuminates in a wider context the concern and the stand that Aeschylus takes on the new socio-political facts of his time.el_GR
