The purpose of this dissertation is to emphasize those points in Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus which have served as a point of departure for Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. In particular, what is the focus of research here, within the context of a comparative study between the two dramas, is the way Ibsen exploits these points by either assimilating or altering them to a certain extent. Initially, both dramas foreground the principle of the laborious conquest of knowledge and truth which comprises a retrospective and an introspective process, as well as the aftermath thereof. Then, I study the role of human freedom and the multidimensional element which transcends rationality as well as –importantly– their cooperation towards moulding the heroes’ lives. Finally, the conflicts which overwhelm the tragic characters are traced within the twofold frame of “new”-“old” as these are expressed in the notions, the people and the successive generations, in the symbolism of light and gloom and in the psychology of the heroes.el_GR
