Samson Agonistes (1671) by John Milton holds a special place in the history of European drama, as a bold and exciting attempt at recreating an ancient Greek tragedy in the English language. The aim of this MA dissertation is to demonstrate the influence of Attic tragedy on Milton’s work in terms both of form and of content; also, to identify the classical Greek models of Samson Agonistes and its points of convergence or divergence in relation to them; lastly, to show that Milton's drama is not an imitation of Attic tragedy, but an original creation “after the Greek manner”, where questions about human existence, freedom, and divine and human justice are formulated. A large part of this dissertation focuses on the comparative reading of Samson Agonistes and its principal Greek models, namely Prometheus Bound and Oedipus at Colonus.el_GR
