dc.description.abstractδιατυπώσεις του Χαλεπά.

The PhD thesis focuses on the reception of the Giannoulis Chalepas’ (1851-1938) work in Greek reality, from his primal participation in an exhibition, in 1870, until his final retrospective, in 2007. At the same time, it attempts a synthetic reading of the modern Greek art history, during the years 1870-2007. The critical discourse on his creations and their management on part of the Greek society consists the basic framework of the research. The sociological-historiographical approach on the Chalepas’ case manifests the Greek horizon of expectation of the period 1870-2007. Moreover, this approach accomplishes the ergographical, biographical treatises on the sculptor, through a critical examination of the ways his pieces of art were aestheticaly evaluated in relation to each time cultural context in Greece. The Chalepas’ creations were always well-accepted by the art theorists and the public in Greece, from the late 19th century up to date despite his radical aesthetic diversifications. The debate on the relation between madness and art, which is been exonerated since the end of the 19th century, holds an important role in this attitude. Those of nationalistic aesthetic stances, they find in his academic aesthetics (1870-1878) the safeguards they seek to validate the “Greek” identity of the country, from 1870 up to 1974. Commenting on his “metalogical” period (1902-1938), they are never negative or against his bold choises, over the years 1902-1974. Instead, they justify his “misconduct” because of his madness. On the other hand, the adherents of alteration, trapped in the quest of the “Greek” character in art, appreciate Chalepas’ youthful classicistic sculptures, too, during the years 1902-2007. Even in them, they detect novel features in the expression of his forms. Their thoughts on modernity strike a fuller application in his mature abstractional compositions, in which they also recognize “Greek” elements in their effort to amplify the “Greek” cultural context. The reception of his work, in connection with his psychopathy, enforce those who are engaged to Chalepas – specialists or not – to delve into his life and to bring his creations to light. The discourse on the “Chalepas” phenomenon, keeps the artist and his work a constant subject of debate among the actors and agents of the Greek cultural scene.el_GR
