The aim of the thesis is to investigate the periphrastic tenses in Modern Greek and in the Cypriot Greek dialect with special emphasis on the Pluperfect. The thesis starts off with two introductory chapters. The first chapter refers to the Cypriot dialect and its attributes while the second introduces the reader to the tense and aspectual properties of the periphrastic verb forms in Greek. The third chapter is a literature review of previous research on the Present Perfect in Standard Modern Greek and in Cypriot Greek. The fourth chapter focuses on the literature concerning the Pluperfect. It contains an overview of the literature on the Pluperfect in medieval Greek and in Cypriot medieval texts. It also includes an overview of the literature on the semantics of the Pluperfect. In the fifth chapter tokens of spontaneously produced Pluperfect tenses by speakers of Cypriot Greek were analyzed following Reichenbach’s model. The data indicate that there is a new kind pluperfect in the Cypriot dialect, with semantic properties which differs from the typical one of preterite or past-in-the-past. Due to the absence of research on the Pluperfect in the present-day Cypriot dialect and because we observed language change in the Pluperfect, I decided to carry out a qualitative survey on the semantics of this tense. The qualitative research is reported in the last chapter of my thesis. After questionnaires were answered during oral interviews, I recorded the results, and then commented on them. The results indicate that the innovative Pluperfect in Cypriot Greek is not always used in the same the way as in Modern Greek.el_GR
