This thesis presents a sociolinguistic approach to language ideologies which are related to linguistic and metalinguistic beliefs, metalanguage, standardization, linguistic relativism and purism. Specifically, in Greece language ideologies are related to the so-called Language Question. The aim of the research is to investigate metalinguistic myths in readers’ comments in web newspapers following a proposal in Parliament by MP Maria Repousi that the number of periods for Ancient Greek language in school should be reduced as Ancient Greek is a “dead language” (Ta Nea, 10-09-2013). The research methodology adopted is a combination of Critical Discourse Analysis and Qualitative Content Analysis and the data analysis takes place in two stages: First the comments are analyzed one by one based on thematic categories and subcategories (semantic, stylistic) derived from the research; second, an overarching classification is attempted based on these categories and their subcategories. The thesis reveals the plethora of metalinguistic myths adopted by newspaper readers in Greece within the frame of interactive communication offered by Web 2.0; it underlines the connection between linguistic and non-linguistic ideologies such as nationalism and racism, and it places emphasis on the style of readers’ comments. Moreover, the codification and analysis of the data proffer new categories to existing analyses of the ideological framework, which enrich the literature.el_GR
