Publication Environmental assessment of composting in the context of sustainable waste management(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2014) ;Lasaridi K. ;Chroni C. ;Abeliotis K. ;Kyriacou A.Translating the gained knowledge about waste management into strategies, attitudes and processes that maintain resources and minimise negative environmental impact constitutes a challenging but inevitable goal. Focusing especially on biodegradable waste, the New Paradigm for sustainable waste management carries an increasing demand for biological treatment. Composting still constitutes the preferred option for biological treatment provided that a high compost quality can be ensured. It may play an important role in the diversion of biowaste from landfills, which accounts for approximately half of the municipal solid waste. Full scale composting is considered as a recycling action, while home composting can be deemed as a waste prevention action. 2014 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Publication Household waste compositional analysis variation from insular communities in the framework of waste prevention strategy plansWaste management planning requires reliable data regarding waste generation, affecting factors on waste generation and forecasts of waste quantities based on facts. In order to decrease the environmental impacts of waste management the choice of prevention plan as well as the treatment method must be based on the features of the waste that are produced in a specific area. Factors such as culture, economic development, climate, and energy sources have an impact on waste composition; composition influences the need of collecting waste more or less frequently of waste collection and disposition. The research question was to discover the main barriers concerning the compositional analysis in Insular Communities under warm climate conditions and the findings from this study enabled the main contents of a waste management plan to be established. These included advice to residents on waste minimisation, liaison with stakeholders and the expansion of kerbside recycling schemes. 2015 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Promoting Sustainable Waste Prevention Strategy Activities and Planning in Relation to the Waste Framework Directive in Insular CommunitiesCitizen's daily activities produce huge quantities of waste affecting the quality of life. On the other hand, citizens are attacked from the media regarding the new products entering the market. Moreover, waste management plans, are sometimes too complex as facilities, like separation and collection, become routine. The production of waste on daily basis is continually increasing; however, the main solution for treatment in insular communities is to send their waste to landfill. According to the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC), prevention is in the top in waste hierarchy. In order to build up our strategy we must first find out what our waste consists of and then develop our waste prevention campaign and strategic plan. Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Waste prevention(American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2016) ;Lasaridi K. ;Chroni C.; Abeliotis K.This chapter first discusses key aspects of waste prevention in a multidisciplinary context. It then defines the term waste prevention and discusses its importance in relation to sustainability. Next, the chapter presents the policy framework of the European Union (EU), the United States (U.S.), and selected countries that have taken important steps toward promoting waste prevention, presenting an analysis of waste prevention actions and initiatives applicable to production, supply, consumption, and the household for different key waste streams. The chapter specifically tackles food waste, packaging waste, nonpackaging paper waste, waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), and green waste. Finally, the chapter examines major barriers affecting waste prevention and reviews successful efforts of central and local authorities, businesses, consumers, and social enterprises in mitigating such negative barriers. 2016 American Society of Civil Engineers. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Publication Waste prevention campaign regarding the waste framework directive(Parlar Scientific Publications, 2014); ;Loizia P. ;Georgiou A. ;Chroni C. ;Phanou K.Bikaki N.Waste prevention will be defined as the prevention of waste at source through avoidance, reduction and reuse, but excluding off site recycling. However, the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) and especially in Article 3, clause 12-13 states that prevention means measures taken before a substance, material or product has become waste. Through a Large LIFE+ Project (Project LIFE10 ENV/GR/000622, that is co funded from EU) which focuses on Development and Demonstration of a Waste Prevention Support Tool for Local Authorities WASP Tool, Municipality of Paralimni has developed a waste prevention awareness campaign and several waste minimization practices. Those activities have to do with the (a) home composting (b) Promoting waste prevention practices like seminars, activities with students from primary school. Also, through the project, the Municipality has prepared and submitted the first study in order to receive an official Licence for the Management of Waste from the Environmental Authorities. These targets, promote the waste management strategic plan that several insular communities have the ability to implement. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Waste Prevention Scenarios Using a Web-Based Tool for Local Authorities(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2015) ;Lasaridi K. ;Hatzi O. ;Batistatos G. ;Abeliotis K. ;Chroni C. ;Kalogeropoulos N. ;Chatzieleftheriou C. ;Gargoulas N. ;Mavropoulos A.; ;Nikolaidou M.Anagnostopoulos D.Waste prevention is the highest ranked priority in the European Waste Framework Directive. The aim of this paper is to present the design, development and main features of a web-based tool that enables local authorities to select and implement optimum waste prevention programmes for their local conditions and to prepare their Waste Prevention Plans. The aforementioned tool, namely the WASP-Tool, is implemented as a knowledge-based decision support system which extracts characteristics and features of the waste prevention strategy models and applies multicriteria evaluation techniques in order to facilitate decision making. It has been developed in Greek and reflects Greek and Cypriot data, context and waste prevention potential, to facilitate its use by local authorities and local administration. The application of the tool is demonstrated and its main features are presented. 2015, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
